Contemporary Artist Nicola Bolla at the Royal Castle of Govone from June 22 to November 3, 2024
Saturday, June 22 at 5:30 PM at the Royal Castle of Govone will inaugurate the new contemporary art exhibition entitled The Theatre, by artist Nicola Bolla, curated by Graziano Menolascina in collaboration with Ponte per l’Arte and the commission Govone Arte of the Associazione Govone Residenza Sabauda.
The Exhibition
With sensible effectiveness, Nicola Bolla dialogues with the marvelous halls of the Royal Castle of Govone, tracing a path studded with numerous historical works accompanied by multiple site-specific installations, designed specifically for the hosting locations.
Nicola Bolla has never been part of a movement, school, or adhered to a particular artistic creed. His work is purely avant-garde , referencing the great history of universal art, ranging from symbolism to surrealism to pop art.
An avant-garde that shares neither language, poetics, nor ideology. It is rather a psychological situation, characterized by rebellion and negotiation towards what is commonly accepted, a tendency to lead towards an undefined future, but also that feeling of futility and loneliness that we usually call alienation.
Another characteristic trait defining Bolla’s work is experimentalism, understood both from a linguistic perspective as an act of experimentation by the producer, to see what results certain combinations lead to, and from a pedagogical perspective, to control the reactions and tastes of the viewer.
The exhibition The Theatre spans a literary and theatrical naturalism, creating an itinerant show that aims to observe, through the works, human and social reality in its everyday life. A sensory journey even before being cognitive, from which the visitor is drawn in as if into another world, no longer just a spectator but a living actor of the work.
The Artist
NICOLA BOLLA was born in Saluzzo in 1963, son of a renowned and versatile painter who introduced him to the world of ancient and modern art and a creative mother with experiences as a set designer and painter. Fascinated by the world of collecting and Wunderkammer, he has always collected ancient and curious objects and his work has always been inspired by a parallel reconstruction of reality through the tools of painting, sculpture, and installations.
After several important solo exhibitions in private galleries in Milan and New York between 2000 and 2007, the year of the exhibition at Sperone Westwater curated by Luca Beatrice, in 2008 he exhibited at the Goss Foundation in Dallas. The dreamlike and parallel universe to reality of the artist had already landed at the Venice Biennale in 1995, returning in the 2009 edition (Italian Pavilion). Recently, he exhibited at MART in Rovereto his large format installations and sculptures made with playing cards, while other works based on the systematic use of Swarovski crystals and playing cards were exhibited at the Royal Palace of Turin in the collective “ANIMALIA. Animals at Court” and at the Reggia of Venaria as part of the exhibition “PLAY. From the squares to the courts”.
His fascinating and independent poetics have led the author to acclaim in Italy and Europe, as well as global appreciation over the past 10 years, with participation in solo and collective exhibitions in the USA and China. His works are in important institutional and private collections.
